For hundreds of years, its empty houses have made people ask one question: where did everybody go? Some say the village is cursed, while others think the people left as a form of protest. So, what really happened to Kuldhara, Rajasthan, the village that became a ghost town? Let’s find out together.

The Kuldhara Village Story: A Mysterious History

Our Kuldhara village story starts in the 13th century. A community called the Paliwal Brahmin built and lived in Kuldhara, Rajasthan. They were known for being very smart and innovative farmers. Even in the dry Thar Desert, they used their knowledge to build irrigation systems and grow healthy green crops. For many years, Kuldhara was a successful and wealthy village.

But in the 18th century, everything changed.

A powerful and cruel minister from Jaisalmer, named Salim Singh, saw the village chief’s daughter and wanted to marry her. He was ready to use force if he had to. The Paliwal Brahmin community, which valued their self-respect, said no to this marriage. In return, Salim Singh gave them a final warning: let him marry the girl, or he would destroy their entire village.

Because of his warning, the Paliwal Brahmins had to make a very difficult choice. The chiefs of 84 nearby villages met one night and made a brave decision. They would not give in to the cruel minister. Instead, they would leave. All of them. That night, every man, woman, and child from Kuldhara and the nearby villages packed what they could and simply disappeared. No one ever saw them again.

Is Kuldhara in Rajasthan Really Haunted?

It is one thing to leave your home, but for thousands of people to disappear completely, without a clue, is very strange. This is where the story gets spooky. Local stories say that as the Paliwal Brahmin community left, they put a curse on the village. They said that no one would ever be able to live in Kuldhara again.

Is Kuldhara in Rajasthan really haunted? Well, some people have tried to live there.

Locals tell tales of families who tried to settle in Kuldhara but were scared away by unexplainable things. It is said that any new house built there would fall on its own, electronic items would stop working, and anyone who stayed the night would get sick or feel a scary presence. Of course, there is no official proof for this, just stories passed down over the years. These spooky tales are why Kuldhara, Rajasthan, is often called a ghost town and one of the most haunted places in Rajasthan.

Science Tries to Solve the Kuldhara Village Story

The question lies: what have experts found in the ghost town of Kuldhara? The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and IIT Jodhpur have used drones and special ground-scanning tools to look under the village’s surface. And they found something!

They saw the traces of buried buildings. The detected pathways seemed like hidden temples, secret tunnels, or something else. But there is no official clarification yet, and they are still studying it, leaving us with more questions about the history of Kuldhara, Rajasthan.

Today, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Rajasthan State Archaeology Department are responsible for maintaining the village ruins, while the Rajasthan Government is constantly developing it as a tourist site. You can buy a ticket and walk through the empty streets of Kuldhara. But there is one important rule that you must take note of: the gates are locked at 6 PM. No one is allowed to be inside after sunset. Is this just for safety, or is it because of the paranormal activities reported in Kuldhara, Rajasthan?

A decade ago, there were reports of the Government trying to develop the facilities to extend the tourism to night stays and proper vacations. This did not sit well with the locals, who were afraid that the Kuldhara ghost town was haunted, cursed, and should not be risked with. The development somehow got lost in the planning of the government and the verbal retaliation of the locals, and thus, the 6 PM rule persists.
